[He simply nods as he picks up his own glass and follows Klaus' example, draining half the glass in two swallows.
He misses the space booze.]
The Detective and I heard you screaming and came to investigate. I knew from the beginning that you were not the one at fault. Your sister's mirror came for Elena after I was rendered useless.
[If Klaus wants to simply lay out the facts, he will do so as well. The most important bit being that there's not blame to be laid here.]
Sam Winchester contacted me, asked a few too many questions. He owed me a favor he agreed to leave it be when I...requested he do so. If he does otherwise, be sure to let me know.
[He takes another sip of his drink.]
I do not abide those that break their word with me.
[And he likes Sam. He'd rather not have to deal with that.]
[ he knows. klaus licks his lips, feels the numbing sensation of the lingering drink dampen his sense. he wishes it would spread out far through his chest, but it never does reach quite far enough.
he knows what happened. despite lucifer's intellect and faith in his forced intentions, he remembers. he remembers all of it.
but it's not why he's here. (it's the only reason he is.)
klaus moves to sit and then he stills, his attention drawn and focused on lucifer. he knows that name, remembers him from that meeting with freya, translating that lovely book. he knows that name from camille, one hunter from a family of hunters. he knows their history, from a time he doesn't recall being here. they weren't quite friends.
he stills too, hearing the finer details. feeling the weight of their impact, their meaning. he's lived long enough and done quite enough to know what 'requested' means in this context. he lived and done enough to recognize that lucifer has put his friendship on the line. he done it for him, regardless and perhaps in spite of his idea of justice.
klaus doesn't receive this lightly. he stares at the line of lucifer's back and thinks of his brother. he remembers elijah, and even though there is no replacement for him, he feels that same fierceness of loyalty given and demonstrated. that same sense of honor to his own. if lucifer would like to handle the betrayal of a friend, it's seems only fair to agree. ] Fair enough, [ he says, and then he does sit.
he waits a moment. ] She drained Elena of blood. [ the impact must land. he knows how lucifer feels about elena. ] I assume you know what that means. What kind of power she holds.
[He manages a smile, though it's sharp at the edges, even if they're not directed Klaus' direction.]
I thought you might understand.
[His friend does not seem the kind who would put up with such a thing, either. Betrayal is something they both understand quite well, and anything resembling it tears at old wounds and ignites his temper to frightening levels.]
I'm not exactly an expert in the magic of your dimension, but yes. I'm aware that she's...special.
[And in this context, he doesn't mean her personality.]
Do you have any idea what use she might need such a thing for? I can't imagine it's good for the rest of us. Or do you think she might have just wanted some magical bodily fluids to save for a rainy day?
[ so he does know. whatever possibility for the alternative is erased; klaus didn't doubt it. elena is as much a presence in both of their lives, rooted in both of their wonderland memories, in the shadows of their alternate hearts. it'd be just like her to reach out. (if klaus feels any minute unease or jealousy for their closeness, he doesn't show it. friends though they were, there is an immutable rift between he and elena that and she and lucifer do not share.)
klaus' jaw works. the truth is they don't know and there's few, insofar knowable ways of knowing. ] Knowing my sister, she has a purpose. Perhaps a few back-up plans as well. [ he pauses, takes a drink, licks his lips. ] It's safe to say either way we should be preparing ourselves for the inevitable. [ for war.
it is impossible to plan and calculate without all variables. he remembers the devastating crunch of lucifer's bones between his jaws, the rush of his blood. he doesn't want to remember that again, but he also wants to know why. he needs to, because there's something lucifer's not told him. ] How could I hurt you?
[He knows Freya to be a very intelligent woman. It seems reasonable that her mirror would be as well.]
Very well. What can I do to help?
[He's already involved, not to mention he's aware that the Detective has already developed a friendship with Klaus and Elena as well. She's not going to leave it alone, either.]
Ah, that. [He drinks the rest of the liquor in his glass in another long sip, moving to refill it.] Detective Decker's arrival complicated things for me, I'm afraid. [In more ways that one.] Her presence makes me...vulnerable. I'm practically mortal when she's anywhere nearby.
[ of all the explanations he could have possibly imagined... quite frankly, he's not surprised. the detective has been the only variable. klaus pauses in thought, with the weight of this confession of literal vulnerability. his lips part, imagining himself rendered essentially mortal by the presence of someone clearly precious to him.
excruciating, he thinks. that's what it must be: a mixture of heaven and hell.
not to mention a strategical nightmare. after a moment, he suggests, ] Perhaps my sister can help you with that. [ he leans forward to put his drink down, catches lucifer's eyes.
the pause is weighted. it's meant to lend weight to what he says next: ] Until then, we will protect you. [ he will. they will. it's a promise: not only in payment of a debt, but in perpetuity of their friendship. lucifer has suffered at their hands but he's also stood by them. by him. he's proven a loyalty. a brotherhood.
as to lucifer's question: ] For now we are shoring up resources. Building defenses. Putting in place weapons. [ he says this because it's true. he says this because he knows there might be mirrors listening.
he pulls over a notepad on the table and scratches a message on the paper. If you can think of anything, do it quietly. he hands it over. ] We have it in hand, for now.
[ his gaze is pointed. he will not make lucifer a target by asking him outright, even though he most certainly already is. but he will ask: not only is lucifer willing and certainly entitled to vengeance, but klaus would be a fool to not consider how formidable this ally could be. ]
[It had been exciting, for a time. He enjoyed the adrenaline rush he felt when his life was actually at risk. He had Maze to protect him, after all. It isn't as if he would actually die and it made him feel something.
Still, he thought himself untouchable. He was still stronger, faster than any human he might come across and he had the best bodyguard around.
Things were different here.]
Freya has offered me her aid in discovering the reason. If we can get to the bottom of it, all the better.
[Lucifer's eyes furrow at his promise, however, something strange stirring inside his chest. The only person who has ever offered him such a thing was Mazikeen, and she'd been at his side a very long time. His relationship with her had been changing in subtle ways since they came to Earth together, and though they had a bond, it wasn't quite like this.
Klaus wasn't swearing his loyalty. He was simply promising to watch his back as his equal as if pulling him into his family by assuring him that his sibling would as well.
He can't find the words, so he says nothing, his eyes dropping down to the message Klaus scrawls on the notepad. He doesn't comment on it, simply lifts his eyes again instead, understanding all too well the need for secrecy.
He has plenty of experience with demons, after all. This isn't so different.]
Do try not to have all the fun.
[He says it with an air of humor, as if he doesn't actually intend to help. As if he isn't going to gladly tear their enemies apart at any opportunity.]
